But what has really happened here?

This photograph was taken on Tuesday, 14 January 2020, during the opening of the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. On the photograph, we can see the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as Andrej Plenkovic, the Croatian Prime Minister.

During this session, the European Parliament was welcoming the new presidency of the Council of the European Union, which was taken over by Croatia on January 1st, 2020. This presidency is rotating, and it changes every 6 months.

Each country prepares its thematic events and priorities which will be developed during its presidency. In the case of Croatia, the accent has been put on education, research and innovation, and space.

Croatia will ensure the presidency until June 30th 2020, when it will be taken over by Germany.
